Rare PR had a chance to delight in a little comfort food with local Author, Dr. Lynda Mubarak at Na Na's Kitchen in Fort Worth, TX and oh boy, was it good! It's always a good time when it comes to good food and great company!
Who is Dr. Lynda? Dr. Lynda Mubarak is an Army veteran, award winning author, and a retired special education teacher. She was an avid reader in elementary school, listened to crime and mystery stories on the radio, but her love for books continued during her career in education.
Her Stations for Kids Book Series promotes early literacy, community service, human compassion and career exploration. Maxine’s New Job won the prestigious Henri Award for excellence in the children’s category by the 2018 Christian Literary Awards. Carver Park, Maxine’s New Job, and Maxine Listens received “Certified Good Read” awards from the Reading with Your Kids Foundation in 2018 and 2019. Book 3, Maxine’s Hands is scheduled for release in Fall 2020. Dr. Lynda and Stations for Kids have established a lifetime partnership with the Community Food Bank of Fort Worth, TX.
Let’s dig a little deeper…
Where did you grow up? What High School/College did you attend?
I grew up in Waco, TX (Carver Park), Fort Worth, TX (Stop 6), and graduated from Paul L. Dunbar High School in Fort Worth. I attended Texas Christian University, Texas Wesleyan University, and Nova SE University.
What were you like as a child?
I was always inquisitive as a child and I read constantly because education and literacy were important to my parents. As a result, books, magazines and the radio were my connection to the world. I fell in love with the crime and mystery stories I heard on the radio. If math was my illness, reading was my cure.
I love that last line, "If math was my illness, reading was my cure."
Let’s fast forward…what inspired you to become an author?
Childhood books inspired me to become an author, but there was no one in my early childhood or adult social circle who was interested in writing or publishing. Therefore, I never discussed it and I had no links to a kindred group.
Where did the inspiration come from to create the amazing character, Maxine?
I think Maxine Hill has been in my head for most of my life and it probably began with me listening to radio programs constantly starting at age five. By the time I was six years old I was listening to crime thrillers or looking at mystery TV including Damon Runyon Theater, Gangbusters, and Johnny Dollar. My favorite detective was Phillip Marlow, so I dreamed that one day I would be as witty as author Raymond Chandler.
What did you teach, grade level? How was school back then compared to now?
I was a teacher and special education facilitator. I served as a Crisis Intervention, Dyslexia, Functional Skills, and Elementary Teacher in grades one through twelve. I was also an adjunct ESL professor at a local community college for 14 years. Parents and students are now faced with more responsibility in the learning process. In addition, the nation’s public schools and colleges will have to constantly adjust their program and delivery systems.

When life gets overwhelming, or self-doubt tries to intervene, what do you do?
When I am faced with self-doubt, I stop. It’s best to pause and think things through before resuming.

Please, elaborate on Writer’s Block. What advice would you give to get past it?
I have heard so many seasoned authors explain that writer’s block is really another misnomer for distractions. Remove all distractions before writing.

What’s next for Dr. Lynda Mubarak?
New release coming soon, September 2020, Maxine's Hands, this is book 3 in The Detective Maxine Hill series. I am also working on a crime thriller story, I’m just waiting for the characters to tell me how they want this urbane, conflicted, high stakes crime delivered.

What words of encouragement would you like to share with aspiring Authors?
First, stay focused on your area of expertise and learn everything you can about your genre or interest. Second, make social media an ally for your books. You want to be remembered for your wonderful stories, not your opinion on pop culture items. Finally, know your audience, know what they need and what they appreciate. Authors inform, entertain and persuade others. Give your readers your best at all times!
